In water treatment, sodium carbonate raises pH by releasing carbonate ions that neutralise acidity and precipitate heavy metals, enabling compliant discharge. In textile and pulp processing, it acts as an alkali catalyst that activates reactive dyes and breaks lignin bonds during pulping. Personal care and pharmaceutical formulators use it as a pH buffer and mild antimicrobial agent in cleansing and topical preparations.
