Description
Sodium chlorite (CAS 7758-19-2, NaClO2) is an inorganic oxidising salt also known under trade names Textone and Alcideld. It carries no E-code designation and is distinct from sodium chlorate and sodium hypochlorite, though all three belong to the chlorine-based oxidant family.
In water treatment, sodium chlorite serves as the precursor to chlorine dioxide, generated on-site by acidification or reaction with chlorine gas to disinfect municipal and industrial water systems. In pulp and paper processing, it bleaches cellulose fibres through selective oxidation of lignin chromophores without degrading the fibre structure itself.
Sodium chlorite is supplied in technical and purified grades, typically as white flakes or powder at 80% active content. It falls under REACH registration requirements within the EU and is subject to biocidal product regulation (BPR) for disinfection applications. Standard packaging includes fibre drums and UN-approved containers suited to its oxidising classification.
