Description

Sodium cyanide (CAS 143-33-9) is an inorganic salt commercially available under trade names including Cymag, Cyanasalt S, and Cyanasalt H, as well as the reference designation NSC 77379. It dissociates in aqueous solution to release the cyanide anion, which drives its reactivity across several industrial processes.

In gold and silver mining, sodium cyanide forms soluble metal-cyanide complexes that selectively extract precious metals from ore pulp, a process known as cyanidation. In electroplating and surface finishing, it serves as a complexing agent in alkaline bath formulations, controlling metal ion activity to produce uniform, adherent coatings. It also functions as a catalyst precursor in certain pharmaceutical synthesis routes.

Sodium cyanide is supplied in solid and solution grades and is subject to strict REACH regulation as a substance of very high concern, requiring authorisation for specific uses within the EU. Handling and transport are governed by ADR hazard class 6.1 requirements. Procurement requires documented end-use justification and compliance with applicable national poison legislation.
