In textile and leather processing, it functions as a reductive bleaching agent, breaking chromophoric bonds in dyes and pigments to achieve whitening or discharge printing effects. In water treatment and pulp and paper applications, it acts as a preservative and biocide by releasing formaldehyde under controlled conditions, inhibiting microbial growth in process water and slurries.
