Description

Sodium formate (CAS 141-53-7, EC 205-488-0, formula CHO2Na) is the sodium salt of formic acid, also known as sodium methanoate or sodium formiate. It carries no E-code designation and is commercially supplied as a crystalline powder under various trade names across industrial and specialty chemical markets.

In leather processing, sodium formate acts as a masking agent during chrome tanning, moderating pH to improve chromium uptake and produce uniform penetration. In oil and gas, it functions as a low-toxicity completion and workover fluid, controlling wellbore pressure through density adjustment. It also serves as a reducing agent and catalyst in chemical synthesis.

Sodium formate is available in technical, feed, and pharmaceutical grades, with the latter conforming to Ph.Eur. and FCC monographs. It is fully registered under REACH and classified under HS code 29151200. Standard packaging includes 25 kg bags and bulk quantities, with food-contact and pharma-grade documentation available on request.
