Sodium linoleate

Sodium linoleate (CAS 822-17-3, EC 212-491-0) is the sodium salt of linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid derived from vegetable oils such as sunflower or corn oil. It is also referenced under the names sodium linolate and linoleic acid sodium salt. No E-code designation applies to this ingredient.

In personal care formulations, sodium linoleate functions as an emulsifier by reducing interfacial tension between oil and water phases, enabling stable cream and lotion systems. In textile and leather processing, it acts as a scouring and degreasing agent, saponifying residual fats and oils from fiber and hide surfaces to prepare them for dyeing or finishing.

Sodium linoleate is available in powder and crystalline grades suitable for cosmetic and industrial applications and is subject to REACH registration requirements for EU supply.
