Description
Sodium nitrite (CAS 7632-00-0), also known as NaNO2 or E250, is an inorganic salt supplied as a white to off-white powder. It functions as both an antioxidant and antimicrobial agent, with registered E-code E250 confirming its status as an approved food additive in the European Union.
In cured meat production, sodium nitrite inhibits Clostridium botulinum growth and stabilises the characteristic pink colour by reacting with myoglobin. In metal treatment and industrial cooling systems, it forms a protective oxide layer on ferrous surfaces, preventing corrosion. Pharmaceutical manufacturers also use it as a controlled reducing agent in specific synthesis steps.
Sodium nitrite is available in food-grade and technical-grade forms, with food applications governed by EU Regulation 1333/2008 under E250. It is also covered under REACH and can be supplied to FCC or Ph.Eur. specifications on request. Standard packaging includes 25 kg bags and bulk options for industrial volumes.
