Sodium PCA

Sodium PCA (CAS 28874-51-3), also known as sodium pidolate or sodium pyroglutamate, is the sodium salt of pyroglutamic acid, a naturally occurring component of the skin's natural moisturising factor (NMF). It carries no assigned E-code and is commonly abbreviated as L-PCA-Na in technical literature and formulation documentation.

In cosmetic formulations, Sodium PCA functions as a humectant by binding atmospheric moisture to the stratum corneum, improving skin hydration at concentrations typically between 2–5%. In pharmaceutical and nutritional applications, it serves as a stabilising counterion for amino acid-based preparations, helping to maintain solution integrity and extend shelf stability.

Sodium PCA is supplied as an aqueous solution and is available in cosmetic and food-grade specifications. It is subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU and can be sourced in compliance with FCC standards for food and nutrition applications. Standard packaging includes drums and IBCs for bulk procurement.
