Description

Sodium pyrithione (CAS 3811-73-2, EC 223-296-5), also known as sodium omadine and pyrithione sodium, is a water-soluble heterocyclic compound derived from 2-mercaptopyridine-N-oxide. It carries no assigned E-code and is commercially supplied as a clear aqueous solution.

In personal care and coatings formulations, sodium pyrithione functions as a preservation biocide by disrupting membrane transport in bacteria and fungi, inhibiting cellular uptake of essential nutrients. In water treatment systems, it controls microbial growth in process water at low active concentrations, reducing biofilm formation without the need for oxidising agents.

Sodium pyrithione is available in standard aqueous solution grades suitable for personal care, industrial, and coatings applications, with supply subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU. Procurement quantities are typically offered in intermediate bulk containers or drums. Buyers should confirm grade specification and regional biocidal product authorisation status prior to ordering.
