Description
Sodium pyrophosphate decahydrate (CAS 13472-36-1) is the hydrated tetrasodium salt of pyrophosphoric acid, commonly abbreviated as TSPP. It is also referred to as tetrasodium diphosphate decahydrate and carries no assigned E-number in its decahydrate form, though anhydrous tetrasodium pyrophosphate is listed as E450(iii) in food applications.
In water treatment, TSPP sequesters calcium and magnesium ions through chelation, preventing scale formation in boiler and cooling systems. In textile and leather processing, it functions as a dispersing and deflocculanting agent, improving dye penetration by controlling metal ion interference. It also serves as a pH buffer in formulations requiring stable alkaline conditions.
The product is available in technical and food-contact grades as white crystalline solid, supplied in 25 kg bags or bulk. It falls under REACH regulation (EC 1907/2006) and is subject to standard phosphate reporting obligations in relevant EU jurisdictions.
