Description
Sodium silicate (CAS 1344-09-8, EC 215-687-4, HS 28391910) is an inorganic salt formed from sodium oxide and silicon dioxide, commercially known under trade names including Water Glass, Q 70, Dryseq, Sikalon, and Du Pont 26. It is supplied as an alkaline aqueous solution or dry powder across a range of silica-to-soda ratios.
In water treatment, sodium silicate acts as a corrosion inhibitor by forming a protective silicate film on metal pipe surfaces, reducing iron and lead leaching. In construction and mining, it functions as a binder and ground consolidant, reacting with calcium or magnesium ions in soil or concrete matrices to produce insoluble silicate gels that increase structural rigidity.
Sodium silicate is available in technical, industrial, and food-contact grades, with solution concentrations typically ranging from 25 to 50% by weight and varying modulus ratios. It is subject to REACH registration and supplied in IBC containers, drums, or bulk tankers depending on grade and volume requirements.
