Sodium sorbate

Sodium Sorbate (E201) is the sodium salt of sorbic acid, registered under CAS 7757-81-5 and EC 231-819-3. It is commercially referenced as sodium 2,4-hexadienoate and sorbic acid sodium salt, and carries the E-code E201 within the European food additive framework.

Sodium Sorbate functions as an antimicrobial preservative by inhibiting the enzymatic activity of mould, yeast, and select bacteria, disrupting cell metabolism at low concentrations. In food manufacturing it extends shelf life in baked goods, dairy products, and beverages. In personal care formulations it controls microbial growth in aqueous systems such as lotions and liquid soaps.

The material is available in food-grade and cosmetic-grade specifications, supplied as a powder or crystalline solid. It complies with FCC and REACH requirements, and procurement should verify conformance to applicable EU food additive regulations under E201.
