Sorbic acid (CAS 110-44-1) is a straight-chain unsaturated organic acid approved as food preservative E200 under EU regulation. It is also referenced as (E,E)-SA, Sorbistat, and FEMA 3921 in flavour and fragrance applications. Its molecular formula is C6H8O2 with a molar mass of 112.13 g/mol.
In food and beverage manufacturing, sorbic acid inhibits mould, yeast, and fungal growth by disrupting microbial enzyme activity, making it effective in baked goods, dairy, and wine at concentrations typically between 0.02% and 0.3%. In personal care formulations, it functions as a pH-dependent preservative and skin conditioner, active primarily below pH 6.5.
Sorbic acid is available in food-grade and cosmetic-grade crystalline powder forms, compliant with E200, FCC, Ph.Eur., and REACH requirements. It is supplied in 25 kg bags and bulk quantities. Documentation including SDS, CoA, and REACH registration support is available upon request.
