Sulfosuccinic acid

Sulfosuccinic acid (CAS 5138-18-1) is a sulfonated dicarboxylic acid supplied as a viscous colourless liquid, also known commercially as Tegokat S 70 and referred to in literature as sulphosuccinic acid or 2-sulfosuccinic acid. It carries no assigned E-code. The molecule combines both sulfonic and carboxylic acid groups within a single structure.

In textile and leather processing, the sulfonic acid group anchors to fibre surfaces while the carboxylic groups lower interfacial tension, improving dye penetration and wetting uniformity. In personal care formulations, it functions as an emulsifier and dispersant, stabilising oil-in-water systems without requiring high-temperature processing. It is also used in printing inks to improve pigment dispersion and substrate adhesion.

Sulfosuccinic acid is supplied in liquid form and falls under REACH registration requirements for European market supply. Procurement teams should confirm concentration grade and packaging format directly with the supplier, as specifications vary by application.
