Description
Sulfuric acid (CAS 7664-93-9), also known as sulphuric acid, contact acid, dipping acid, BOV, and NSC 248648, is a strong mineral acid produced industrially via the contact process. It is one of the highest-volume commodity chemicals in global production and serves as a foundational reagent across heavy industry and manufacturing.
In metal processing and mining, sulfuric acid dissolves oxide ores during hydrometallurgical leaching, enabling copper and uranium recovery. In water treatment, it corrects alkaline pH by neutralising carbonate hardness. In fertiliser production, it reacts with phosphate rock to yield phosphoric acid and superphosphates, driving the majority of global consumption.
Sulfuric acid is available in technical, industrial, and reagent grades, with concentrations typically ranging from 93% to 98%. It is subject to REACH regulation and classified under CLP. Procurement in Europe is available in IBC containers, road tankers, and drummed formats depending on concentration and application requirements.
