Tartrazine

Tartrazine (CAS 1934-21-0) is a synthetic azo dye approved as a food colorant under the designation FD&C Yellow No. 5 in the United States and listed as INS 102 in international food standards. It is also referenced under the trade designations Y-4, AY 23, and CI 19140, and carries the EC number 217-699-5.

In food and beverage manufacturing, tartrazine imparts a stable lemon-yellow hue to products such as soft drinks, confectionery, and sauces by absorbing light in the blue-violet spectrum. In pharmaceutical tablet coating and personal care formulations, it provides consistent, reproducible colour at low concentrations without affecting product stability.

Tartrazine is supplied as a food-grade powder compliant with FCC and EU food additive specifications, as well as cosmetic and pharmaceutical grades meeting relevant purity thresholds. The substance falls under REACH registration requirements within the EU. Packaging is available in fibre drums and multi-layer bags to suit bulk procurement.
