Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate, commonly known as THPS 75 or by trade names such as Retardol S and Proban NX, is an organophosphorus compound registered under CAS 55566-30-8 and EC 259-709-0. It is supplied as a 75% active aqueous solution and carries no assigned E-code for food applications.
In textile and leather processing, THPS 75 functions as a durable flame retardant by forming a cross-linked phosphorus network within cellulosic fibres that interrupts combustion at the char stage. In water treatment and oilfield applications, it acts as a biocide by disrupting microbial cell membranes, controlling sulfate-reducing bacteria in cooling towers and injection water systems.
