Description
Triclosan (CAS 3380-34-5) is a chlorinated aromatic compound available under trade names including Irgasan, TROX-100, and CH-3565. It functions as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent active against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as certain fungi and yeasts.
In personal care and pharmaceutical formulations, triclosan disrupts bacterial fatty acid synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme enoyl-ACP reductase, preventing cell membrane formation. In textile and polymer applications, it is incorporated during processing to provide durable antimicrobial protection against odour-causing microorganisms and surface contamination.
Triclosan is supplied as a solid in technical and pharmaceutical grades, with the latter conforming to Ph.Eur. and USP monograph specifications. It falls under REACH registration requirements within the EU, and its use in cosmetic products is restricted under EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009. Standard packaging formats include fibre drums and multi-wall bags; custom quantities are available on request.
