Tripropylamine

Tripropylamine (CAS 102-69-2, EC 203-047-7) is a tertiary aliphatic amine with the molecular formula C9H21N, also referred to as NPr3, TNPA, Tri-n-propylamine, and (n-C3H7)3N. It carries no E-code designation. As a tertiary amine, it bears no N-H bonds, making it non-nucleophilic at nitrogen under standard conditions.

In pharmaceutical synthesis, tripropylamine functions as a non-nucleophilic base and acid scavenger, neutralising HCl generated during acylation or sulfonylation steps without competing with the substrate. In polymer and lubricant formulations, it acts as a catalyst for urethane linkage formation and as a pH buffer to stabilise additive packages against acidic degradation.

Tripropylamine is supplied as a technical-grade liquid and is subject to REACH registration requirements within the European Economic Area. It is classified and labelled in accordance with CLP regulation. Packaging is typically available in drums and intermediate bulk containers, with documentation including SDS and CoA on request.
