Description

Xylitol (CAS 87-99-0) is a five-carbon sugar alcohol derived from xylose, commercially known under names including Xylit, Kylit, Kannit, and Eutrit. It carries no E-number designation in the EU but is approved as a food additive under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, classified within the polyols category.

In food and pharmaceutical formulations, xylitol functions as a humectant by binding free water molecules, reducing water activity and extending shelf life in confectionery and oral care products. In topical cosmetic preparations, it acts as a skin conditioner and buffer, helping stabilise pH while supporting the skin's natural moisture barrier.

Xylitol is available in food-grade and Ph.Eur.-compliant grades as a white crystalline powder, with FCC-grade material suitable for North American food applications. It is fully REACH-registered and supplied in 25 kg bags or bulk quantities. Procurement teams should confirm grade specification against intended application prior to ordering.
