Description

Zinc 2-ethylhexanoate (CAS 136-53-8) is an organometallic zinc salt derived from 2-ethylhexanoic acid, commercially known as Zinc Octoate or Octoate Z. It carries no assigned E-code and is identified under EC number 205-251-1. The compound is supplied as a colorless to light yellow viscous liquid.

In coatings and sealants, it functions as a drying catalyst and cross-linking agent, accelerating oxidative cure in alkyd systems and promoting urethane network formation by activating isocyanate-polyol reactions. In PVC and rubber processing, it acts as a heat stabilizer and vulcanization co-agent, coordinating with polymer chains to retard thermal degradation.

Zinc 2-ethylhexanoate is available in standard liquid grades at varying zinc metal concentrations, typically 18-22% Zn by weight. It falls under REACH registration requirements for supply within the EU. Packaging is commonly offered in drums and IBC containers to suit industrial procurement volumes.
