Description
Zinc sulfate heptahydrate (ZnSO4·7H2O, CAS 7446-20-0) is an inorganic zinc salt commercially known as zinc vitriol or ZINCI SULFAS. It carries no E-code designation and is supplied as a solid crystalline material soluble in water and glycerol.
In water treatment, zinc sulfate acts as a coagulation aid and algaecide, releasing Zn2+ ions that disrupt microbial cell membranes at controlled concentrations. In agriculture, it corrects zinc deficiency in soils and foliar sprays, directly supporting enzyme function in crops. Personal care formulators use it as an astringent and antimicrobial active in toners and foot-care products.
Zinc sulfate heptahydrate is available in technical, feed, and pharmaceutical grades, with the latter conforming to Ph.Eur. and FCC monographs. The substance is registered under REACH (EC 616-097-3) and subject to classification as a hazardous substance for aquatic environments. Standard packaging includes 25 kg bags and bulk quantities.
