Description

CHAPSO (CAS 82473-24-3), also known as 3-[(3-Cholamidopropyl)dimethylammonio]-2-hydroxy-1-propanesulfonate, is a zwitterionic detergent developed specifically for membrane protein research and biochemical applications. It solubilizes biological membranes while preserving the native structure and activity of membrane-bound proteins. This is a critical requirement in research and biopharmaceutical workflows for maintaining protein integrity.

This product is the detergent of choice for solubilizing and stabilizing integral membrane proteins during purification. It has become a standard reagent in receptor binding studies and enzyme activity assays. In pharmaceutical research, it supports the isolation of functionally intact membrane protein targets used in drug discovery programs. Its mild solubilization profile makes it suitable for two-dimensional crystallization.

Harsher detergents would cause irreversible denaturation in these sensitive environments. It is also used in lipid-protein reconstitution systems where maintaining bilayer-like environments is required for success. The material is supplied as a white to off-white powder. It is available primarily in research-grade and high-purity biochemical grades, with lot-specific purity documentation typically required for industrial use.

Documentation is often necessary for GMP-adjacent pharmaceutical applications. Pack sizes range from small laboratory quantities up to bulk procurement for large-scale bioprocessing facilities.
