Ethyl hydrogen sebacate
Description
Ethyl hydrogen sebacate (CAS 693-55-0), also known as monoethyl sebacate, is a half-ester of sebacic acid used as a reactive intermediate and functional additive across polymer and lubricant formulations.
It provides one free carboxylic acid group and one ethyl ester group, giving formulators a chemically addressable building block for controlled crosslinking, plasticization, and surface protection.
In plastics and polymer processing, it acts as a plasticizer and softener, improving flexibility in PVC and specialty polymer compounds without the volatility concerns of shorter-chain esters.
Lubricant formulators incorporate it for its corrosion-inhibiting properties, particularly in metalworking fluids where protection of ferrous and non-ferrous surfaces is a qualification requirement.
Coating and adhesive manufacturers use it as a reactive modifier to tune adhesion, flexibility, and film integrity in alkyd and polyurethane systems during the manufacturing process.
It also serves as a synthesis intermediate for producing diester lubricant base stocks and sebacate-based plasticizers at commercial scale for various industrial applications.
Ethyl hydrogen sebacate is supplied as a liquid at ambient conditions. It is available in technical grade, with purity specifications typically confirmed by acid value and ester content.
Packaging options generally include drums and intermediate bulk containers for industrial quantities. Proper storage ensures the chemical stability and performance of the product over time.
