Description

Polyalkylene glycol monobutyl ether (CAS 9038-95-3), also marketed as polyethylene-polypropylene glycol monobutyl ether, is a block or random copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide capped with a butyl group.

It functions as a nonionic surfactant, solvent, and wetting agent across cleaning, lubrication, and textile processing applications. In industrial and household cleaning formulations, it improves soil release and degreasing performance.

This chemical is particularly effective at low use levels in hard surface cleaners and degreasers. Metalworking fluid formulators incorporate it as a lubricity modifier and emulsifier for various industrial systems.

Its controlled hydrophilic-lipophilic balance helps stabilize cutting and rolling oil emulsions effectively. Textile processors use it as a wetting and scouring agent to ensure uniform dye penetration and fiber preparation.

In paper and leather processing, it acts as a surface modifier to control absorption and improve treatment uniformity. The product is supplied as a clear liquid across a range of molecular weights for diverse needs.

The EO/PO ratios are tailored to specific HLB requirements for different industrial applications. Technical grade is the standard commercial offering, with product specifications varying by molecular weight.

Suppliers typically offer multiple grades differentiated by viscosity and ethylene oxide content to suit different formulation targets. This versatility makes it a staple component in modern chemical manufacturing and processing.
