Octyl stearate
Description
Octyl stearate (CAS 109-36-4) is a fatty acid ester produced from stearic acid and octanol, used across personal care, plastics, and industrial lubrication. It functions as an emollient, plasticizer, and carrier medium depending on the application.
In personal care formulations, it acts as a skin-conditioning emollient and solvent carrier for active ingredients in creams, lotions, and color cosmetics. Plastics and polymer processors use it as an internal plasticizer and lubricant.
This material helps to improve flexibility and processing flow in PVC and similar compounds. In metalworking and industrial lubrication, it serves as a base fluid or additive component in cutting oils and release agents.
It is particularly effective where a non-volatile, film-forming lubricant is required. Its low polarity also makes it a useful dispersing medium for pigments and waxes in coatings and specialty formulations.
Octyl stearate is supplied as a clear to pale yellow liquid. Technical and cosmetic grades are the standard commercial offerings, with cosmetic-grade material meeting purity specifications relevant to personal care manufacturing.
Bulk supply is available in drums and intermediate bulk containers. Cosmetic-grade lots are typically accompanied by standard quality documentation to ensure consistency and performance in sensitive applications.
