Sodium allylsulfonate
Description
Sodium allylsulfonate (CAS 2495-39-8), commonly abbreviated as SAS, is a reactive sulfonate monomer used across polymer chemistry and surface treatment industries. It introduces permanent sulfonate functionality into polymer backbones.
This enables controlled modification of surface charge, hydrophilicity, and ionic character in finished materials. In electroplating and metal finishing, SAS is incorporated into nickel and chrome bath formulations.
It acts as a brightening and leveling co-monomer, improving deposit uniformity and surface quality. Textile and leather processors use it to graft sulfonate groups onto fiber surfaces, enhancing dye uptake.
This process improves wet fastness in synthetic fabrics. In polymer manufacturing, SAS copolymerizes with acrylic acid, acrylamide, or vinyl acetate to produce scale inhibitors and dispersants for water systems.
These are used for industrial water treatment systems. Paper manufacturers apply SAS-based copolymers as retention aids and surface sizing agents to improve sheet formation and ink receptivity.
Sodium allylsulfonate is supplied as a white crystalline powder or as an aqueous solution. Solution concentrations are typically around 40–50% w/w for most industrial and technical applications.
Standard commercial grades are available with purity specifications commonly at 98% or higher for solid forms. Packaging ranges from small drums to bulk quantities to suit both laboratory and high-volume producers.
