Description

Sodium methallylsulfonate (CAS 1561-92-8), commonly abbreviated as SMAS, is a reactive sulfonate monomer used as a functional comonomer in polymer synthesis. It introduces anionic sulfonate groups into polymer backbones.

This chemical enables targeted performance modifications in industrial formulations. In water treatment, SMAS is copolymerized into scale inhibitors and dispersants that prevent mineral deposition in cooling towers.

These industrial water systems benefit from the enhanced stability provided by the monomer. Textile and paper processing operations use SMAS-based polymers to improve dye uptake and fiber affinity.

The monomer also improves surface sizing performance in paper manufacturing. In the plastics and polymers sector, it is incorporated into acrylic and vinyl copolymers to enhance colloidal stability.

This improves electrolyte tolerance in emulsion systems during production. Leather processing also employs SMAS-derived polymers as retanning and dispersing agents for better results.

These agents improve the penetration and uniformity of treatment across the material. Sodium methallylsulfonate is typically supplied as a white crystalline powder or as an aqueous solution.

Standard concentrations are available, and the Technical grade is the primary commercial specification for industrial buyers. It is offered in bulk quantities suited to polymer manufacturing.

Packaging options range from bags to intermediate bulk containers to meet logistics needs. This versatile monomer remains a critical component for high-performance anionic polymer production.
