Dodecenylsuccinic acid
Description
Dodecenylsuccinic acid (CAS 29658-97-7) is a long-chain alkenyl dicarboxylic acid used across coatings, lubricants, and polymer systems. Its bifunctional acid structure enables it to act as a corrosion inhibitor.
It also serves as a reactive intermediate and plasticizing agent depending on the formulation. In metalworking and industrial lubricants, it functions as a corrosion inhibitor by adsorbing onto metal surfaces.
This process forms a protective barrier against rust and oxidation. Coatings formulators incorporate it as a reactive building block in alkyd and epoxy systems where its pendant chain contributes flexibility.
The diacid groups participate in crosslinking and curing reactions. In adhesive and sealant formulations, it improves substrate adhesion and modifies the mechanical profile of the cured system.
Polymer producers use it as a monomer or plasticizer precursor in polyester and polyamide synthesis. The dodecenyl chain imparts internal softening without requiring a separate additive.
Dodecenylsuccinic acid is typically supplied as a viscous liquid or low-melting solid, depending on isomer distribution and purity. Technical grade is the standard commercial offering.
Purity specifications are commonly confirmed by acid value and saponification value. Packaging is available in drums and IBC containers suited to industrial procurement volumes.
