Methyl lactate
Description
Methyl lactate (CAS 547-64-8) is the methyl ester of lactic acid, functioning as a biodegradable solvent and pH modifier across food, pharmaceutical, and industrial processing applications.
Derived from renewable feedstocks, it offers a greener alternative to conventional polar solvents in formulations and manufacturing processes. In electronics, it is used as a photoresist stripper.
It effectively removes residues from circuit boards without the toxicity profile of chlorinated alternatives. Personal care formulators incorporate it as a solvent and mild acidulant in skin-conditioning products.
Its compatibility with aqueous and organic phases supports stable emulsion systems. In printing and packaging, it functions as a solvent carrier in ink formulations, improving flow and substrate adhesion.
Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as a process solvent in active ingredient synthesis and as a carrier in topical preparations requiring controlled pH. It is supplied as a clear liquid.
Standard commercial grades include technical grade for industrial solvent applications and high-purity grades meeting pharmaceutical and food-grade specifications such as USP and FCC standards.
Buyers should confirm optical purity requirements, as both racemic (DL) and enantiomerically enriched forms are available depending on the application. Bulk tanker options are available for high-volume buyers.
