Description

Methyltrichlorosilane (CAS 75-79-6), commonly abbreviated as MTS, is a reactive chlorosilane monomer used as a fundamental building block in silicone polymer synthesis and surface treatment chemistry. It functions as a trifunctional crosslinker and surface modifier, enabling the formation of durable siloxane networks across a range of industrial processes. In silicone manufacturing, MTS serves as a key precursor.

It is used for producing methylsilicone resins, fluids, and elastomers through controlled hydrolysis and condensation reactions. The electronics industry relies on it for chemical vapor deposition of silicon carbide coatings. It also acts as a surface passivation agent on semiconductor substrates. In building and construction, it is applied to mineral substrates such as concrete, stone, and masonry to impart water repellency.

This is achieved through covalent bonding to surface hydroxyl groups. Textile and paper processing operations use MTS-derived treatments to achieve release coatings and hydrophobic finishes on fiber and sheet materials. Methyltrichlorosilane is supplied as a colorless, fuming liquid in standard industrial packaging including drums and ISO tank containers for bulk procurement. It is available in technical grade for synthesis.

Purity levels are typically at 98% or higher as standard for industrial applications. Buyers should confirm moisture-controlled packaging requirements, as the product reacts with atmospheric humidity during storage.
