Tallow trimethyl ammonium chloride
Description
Tallow trimethyl ammonium chloride (CAS 8030-78-2), also marketed as Tallowtrimonium chloride, is a cationic quaternary ammonium surfactant derived from tallow fatty acids. It functions as a conditioning agent, antistatic compound, and surface modifier across personal care, textile, and industrial cleaning applications.
In hair care formulations, it adsorbs onto negatively charged hair fiber to deliver detangling, softness, and static control in conditioners and rinse-off treatments. Textile processors apply it as a fabric softener and antistatic finish, improving handle and reducing static buildup on synthetic and natural fiber substrates.
In leather processing, it acts as a surface conditioning agent that aids uniform dye uptake and improves finished leather feel. Industrial and institutional cleaning formulators use it as an emulsifier and wetting agent in hard surface treatments where cationic charge provides substantivity to surfaces.
Tallow trimethyl ammonium chloride is typically supplied as an aqueous solution, with active content commonly ranging from 50% to 75%. Technical grade is the standard commercial offering for textile and industrial applications, while personal care grades are available to meet cosmetic formulation requirements.
Packaging is generally available in drums and intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) for industrial volumes. This chemical is valued for its high substantivity and efficiency in modifying surface properties across diverse manufacturing sectors.
