Barium chloride
Description
Barium chloride (CAS 10361-37-2), also known historically as Muryate of Barytes or barium muriate, is an inorganic barium salt used across industrial processing as a precipitating agent, flux, and chemical intermediate.
Procurement demand is driven primarily by metal treatment, water purification, and specialty chemical synthesis applications. In water treatment, it precipitates sulfate ions from industrial effluents and process water.
This process enables compliance with discharge limits. Metal and mining operations use it as a flux in heat treatment baths for steel hardening, where it improves surface quality and carbon uptake during the process.
Textile and leather processors apply it in dyeing and tanning processes, where controlled precipitation of sulfates affects bath chemistry and product consistency. It also functions as a catalyst precursor.
The material serves as a barium source in the manufacture of other barium compounds, including barium sulfate and barium carbonate. It is supplied as a white crystalline powder or granules for industrial use.
The dihydrate form is the most commonly traded commercial grade. Standard supply grades include technical and industrial specifications, with purity levels typically ranging from 98% to 99%+ for most applications.
Bulk quantities are available in bags or drums, with packaging suited to industrial-scale procurement. The material is handled according to strict safety protocols due to its chemical properties and industrial nature.
