Bentonite
Description
Bentonite (CAS 1302-78-9), also known commercially as Gumbrin, Otaylite, and Wilkonite, is a naturally occurring smectite clay sourced primarily from volcanic ash deposits.
In industrial applications, it functions as a rheology modifier, binder, and flocculant across a broad range of processing and formulation environments. In water treatment, it acts as a coagulant.
It is used to remove suspended solids, turbidity, and contaminants from municipal and industrial effluents. Civil engineering projects rely on it as a slurry component in foundation drilling and tunnel boring.
It is also used in landfill liner systems where low permeability is required. Coatings and adhesive formulators incorporate it to control viscosity, prevent sagging, and improve suspension stability.
In agriculture, it serves as a binder in granular fertilizer and animal feed pellet production. This improves pellet integrity and reduces dust during the handling and distribution process.
The material is supplied as a fine powder, granules, or coarse chips depending on the target application. Sodium and calcium are the two principal commercial grades available for purchase.
Sodium bentonite is preferred where high swelling capacity is required. Grades are available to food-grade, FCC, and technical specifications to meet various industrial requirements.
Organically modified variants are also offered for specialty coatings and rheology applications. These specialized grades ensure compatibility with a wide range of solvent- and water-based systems.
