Isopropyl palmitate
Description
Isopropyl palmitate (CAS 142-91-6), commonly abbreviated as IPP and sold under trade names such as Wickenol 111, Unimate IPP, and Tegosoft P, is a synthetic ester of isopropyl alcohol and palmitic acid. It functions as an emollient, carrier solvent, and lubricant across personal care, pharmaceutical, and industrial formulations. In cosmetics and skincare, IPP is used as a lightweight emollient and spreading agent.
It is frequently found in creams, lotions, lip products, and color cosmetics, where it improves skin feel without a greasy residue. Pharmaceutical manufacturers incorporate it into topical drug delivery systems. These applications include ointments and transdermal patches, where it acts as a carrier that enhances active penetration and formulation spreadability. In hair care, it conditions and adds gloss to treatments.
Industrial and metalworking formulators use IPP as a lubricant base and carrier in cutting fluids and release agents. It is preferred where low viscosity and good surface wetting are required for the process. Isopropyl palmitate is supplied as a clear, low-viscosity liquid. It is available in cosmetic-grade and pharmaceutical-grade specifications, with the latter conforming to USP, BP, and Ph.Eur. standards.
Bulk supply is standard in drums and IBCs, with cosmetic and pharma grades being the most commercially active. This versatile ester remains a staple for formulators seeking high purity and consistent performance.
