Sodium benzotriazole
Description
Sodium benzotriazole (CAS 15217-42-2), also known commercially as sodium benzotriazolide, is a water-soluble corrosion inhibitor and metal deactivator used across industrial and specialty chemical applications.
It functions by forming a stable protective complex on copper, brass, and other non-ferrous metal surfaces, preventing oxidation and degradation in aggressive environments.
In metalworking and industrial lubricants, it is incorporated into cutting fluids, hydraulic oils, and rust-preventive formulations to protect copper alloy components during machining and storage.
Water treatment programs use it to inhibit copper corrosion in cooling tower circuits and closed-loop systems, where uncontrolled metal ion release would compromise system integrity.
Electronics manufacturing relies on it as a surface passivation agent during PCB processing and metal finishing, preventing tarnish on copper traces and contacts.
Automotive antifreeze and coolant formulations include it to protect brass and copper radiator components under high-temperature operating conditions.
Sodium benzotriazole is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder or as an aqueous solution, with solution concentrations typically ranging from 40% to 50%.
Technical grade is the standard commercial specification, though high-purity grades are available for electronics and precision industrial applications. It is commonly packaged in drums or IBCs.
