Description

Sodium 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (CAS 2492-26-4), commonly referenced as Sodium MBT or Na-MBT, is the water-soluble sodium salt form of mercaptobenzothiazole used across industrial sectors as a corrosion inhibitor and biocide.

Unlike its parent compound, it dissolves readily in aqueous systems, making it the preferred form for liquid formulations requiring metal protection or microbial control in various manufacturing environments.

In metalworking and cutting fluid formulations, Na-MBT protects non-ferrous metals, particularly copper and brass, from corrosion during machining and storage. This ensures the integrity of the finished metal parts.

Water treatment systems use it to inhibit metal corrosion in cooling towers and closed-loop circuits where copper alloy components are present. It provides a protective layer that prevents oxidative damage to the system.

Automotive antifreeze and coolant manufacturers incorporate it as a copper and brass corrosion inhibitor to extend system component life. This application is critical for maintaining the efficiency of vehicle cooling systems.

It also functions as a preservative and biocide in industrial fluids, rubber latex processing, and coating systems where microbial growth would degrade product quality. This helps maintain the shelf life of the fluids.

Sodium MBT is supplied as a white to off-white powder or as an aqueous solution, typically at 50% concentration. Standard grades include technical grade for industrial applications and higher-purity grades for specialty formulations.

Packaging ranges from bags and drums to intermediate bulk containers depending on volume requirements. These options allow for flexible logistics and storage solutions for chemical distributors and end-users alike.
