2-(thiocyanomethylthio)benzothiazole
Description
2-(Thiocyanomethylthio)benzothiazole (CAS 21564-17-0), commercially known as TCMTB, is a broad-spectrum biocide used across industrial manufacturing and water treatment applications. Marketed under trade names such as Alentisan and Ichiban, it controls fungal and bacterial growth. This chemical is essential in process environments where microbial contamination leads to product degradation or equipment fouling. In leather and textile processing, it is applied as a preservative in wet-end operations.
It prevents microbial spoilage of hides, pelts, and fiber materials during storage and transport. Pulp and paper mills use it as a slimicide to inhibit biofilm formation in process water systems, reducing downtime. This application prevents contamination of finished paper stock and maintains system efficiency. Coating, adhesive, and sealant formulators incorporate it as an in-can preservative to extend shelf life.
It is highly effective at preventing spoilage of water-based formulations during long-term storage. Industrial water treatment programs rely on this compound to control microbial populations in cooling towers. It is also utilized in recirculating systems to ensure operational stability. The product is supplied primarily as a liquid concentrate, typically in aqueous or solvent-based formulations at active concentrations of around 30%.
Technical grade is the standard commercial specification for industrial applications. It is available in bulk quantities suited to industrial procurement volumes and large-scale manufacturing requirements.
