Tetramethylthiuram monosulfide
Description
Tetramethylthiuram monosulfide (CAS 97-74-5), commercially known as TMTM or Unads, is an organosulfur accelerator used primarily in rubber vulcanization and crop protection formulations. Unlike its disulfide counterpart, the monosulfide structure offers a distinct cure profile suited to specific processing requirements. In rubber compounding, it functions as a primary or secondary accelerator.
This chemical enables controlled cure rates in natural and synthetic rubber goods including seals, hoses, and molded components. It is also used in agricultural formulations as a fungicide and seed treatment agent. The product targets soil-borne pathogens in cereal and vegetable crops. Polymer stabilization is another application where it acts as an antioxidant additive in plastic compounds for long-term thermal stability.
In latex systems, it contributes to prevulcanization control, giving formulators tighter command over gel formation and final product consistency. This ensures high performance in specialized manufacturing environments. The material is supplied as a pale yellow to off-white powder, the standard physical form for rubber and agricultural end uses. Technical grade is the predominant commercial specification for industrial use.
Purity is typically confirmed by active content assay to meet industry requirements. Pre-dispersed masterbatch forms are available for rubber processing applications where dust-free handling is a plant requirement.
