Benzisothiazolinone
Description
Benzisothiazolinone (CAS 2634-33-5), commonly abbreviated as BIT, is a broad-spectrum biocide used to prevent microbial degradation in industrial formulations and manufactured goods. It targets bacteria, fungi, and yeast across a wide range of pH conditions, making it a practical preservation solution for both aqueous and semi-aqueous systems.
In paints, coatings, and adhesives, BIT functions as an in-can preservative, protecting formulations from spoilage during storage and extending shelf life for various industrial applications. Metalworking fluids and lubricants incorporate BIT to control bacterial growth that would otherwise cause fluid breakdown and corrosion in machining operations and heavy equipment maintenance.
Leather, textile, and paper manufacturers use it to protect materials during processing and in finished goods where microbial attack poses a significant quality risk to the final product. Water treatment programs and cooling systems also rely on BIT as a biostatic agent to limit biofilm formation in recirculating systems and industrial water circuits across many sectors.
BIT is supplied as a crystalline powder and in liquid solution form, with concentration levels varying by application requirement and the specific needs of the manufacturing process. Standard technical-grade material is the most common commercial form, though formulated blends with complementary biocides are available for enhanced efficacy and documentation is standard for procurement.
