Octhilinone
Description
Octhilinone (CAS 26530-20-1), commonly abbreviated as OIT and also known as 2-Octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one, is a broad-spectrum biocide used to prevent microbial degradation. Its activity targets bacteria, fungi, and algae, making it a standard preservation choice across coatings, personal care, and industrial process fluids for long-term stability.
In architectural and industrial coatings, OIT is incorporated as a dry-film preservative to protect cured paint surfaces from fungal and algal growth over an extended service life. Adhesives, sealants, and elastomers rely on OIT to prevent microbial attack during storage and in-service exposure to humid environments, ensuring product integrity and performance.
In textile, leather, and paper processing, it controls spoilage organisms in aqueous process baths and finished goods, preventing discoloration and structural degradation of the materials. Metalworking fluids and lubricants use OIT to extend fluid service life by suppressing bacterial contamination that causes emulsion breakdown and unpleasant odors in industrial settings.
Octhilinone is supplied as a liquid concentrate, typically as a solution in carrier solvents or water at active concentrations of 45% or higher for easy formulation integration. The Technical grade is the standard commercial form for industrial applications. Personal care applications may require material meeting specific purity thresholds for safety.
