4-octylphenol
Description
4-Octylphenol (CAS 1806-26-4), also known as p-octylphenol, is an alkylphenol intermediate used across industrial chemistry as a monomer, surfactant precursor, and stabilizing agent.
Its primary commercial role is as a building block for ethoxylated nonionic surfactants and resin-based formulations. In textile and leather processing, it serves as a precursor to octylphenol ethoxylates.
These ethoxylates are used in scouring, dyeing auxiliaries, and emulsification baths. Lubricant and metalworking formulators incorporate it as an antioxidant component and additive intermediate to extend fluid service life.
In plastics and polymer manufacturing, it functions as a chain-terminating monomer and co-monomer in phenolic resins and polycarbonate-type systems. This ensures structural stability in various industrial polymers.
Water treatment chemical producers also use it as a starting material for dispersant and emulsifier synthesis. 4-Octylphenol is supplied as a liquid or low-melting solid, typically in bulk drums or IBC containers.
Technical grade is the standard commercial specification for industrial applications. Buyers should confirm purity levels, commonly 98%+, and the specific isomeric profile required for their unique processes.
The linear n-octyl form is specified separately from branched variants in many end-use formulations. Proper handling and storage are essential to maintain the chemical integrity of this versatile industrial intermediate.
