Isooctyl thioglycolate
Description
Isooctyl thioglycolate (CAS 25103-09-7), also known as isooctyl mercaptoacetate, is a sulfur-containing ester used as a reactive intermediate and functional additive across polymer, rubber, and lubricant applications. It acts as a chain transfer agent, plasticizer, and stabilizer component depending on the formulation system. In PVC and polymer processing, it functions as a co-stabilizer component and plasticizing modifier.
This chemical improves flexibility and thermal processing performance in finished compounds. Rubber formulators use it to influence vulcanization chemistry and as a softening agent in specialty elastomer blends. In lubricant and metalworking fluid formulations, it contributes sulfur-active functionality relevant to extreme-pressure and boundary lubrication performance. It also serves as a monomer or chain transfer agent.
This is particularly useful in free-radical polymerization, where controlled molecular weight distribution is a process requirement. Isooctyl thioglycolate is supplied as a liquid for industrial use. Technical grade is the standard commercial offering, with purity specifications typically confirmed by GC analysis. Packaging ranges from drums to IBC containers to suit bulk industrial procurement needs.
