Tolyltriazole
Description
Tolyltriazole (CAS 29385-43-1), also known as methylbenzotriazole or TTZ, is a heterocyclic corrosion inhibitor used across metalworking, water treatment, and industrial maintenance applications. It functions by forming a stable protective complex on copper and copper alloy surfaces, preventing oxidative and electrochemical degradation. In lubricant and metalworking fluid formulations, TTZ is added as a metal deactivator.
This protects copper-containing components from corrosion during machining and high-load operations. Automotive coolant manufacturers incorporate it to safeguard brass and copper radiator components throughout extended service cycles. Water treatment programs, particularly in cooling tower and closed-loop systems, rely on TTZ to control copper corrosion under varying pH and temperature conditions. This ensures the longevity of industrial infrastructure.
Industrial and institutional cleaning products use it as a tarnish inhibitor to maintain the appearance and integrity of metal surfaces. This is critical after contact with aggressive cleaning agents in commercial settings. Tolyltriazole is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder, with liquid concentrate forms also available for easier handling in water-based systems. Standard commercial grades include technical-grade material.
Purity levels are typically specified at 98% or higher for industrial use. Packaging ranges from small drums to bulk quantities to suit both formulators and large-volume industrial buyers across the global market.
