Triethylenediamine
Description
Triethylenediamine (CAS 280-57-9), commercially known as DABCO, is a bicyclic diamine used primarily as a tertiary amine catalyst in polyurethane manufacturing. It accelerates the reaction between isocyanates and polyols.
This chemical controls foam formation and cure rates across a broad range of formulations. In flexible and rigid polyurethane foam production, it drives the gelling and blowing reactions that determine cell structure.
The catalyst is essential for managing density and mechanical performance in industrial applications. Adhesive and sealant formulators use it to accelerate cure in two-component polyurethane and epoxy systems.
By reducing open time and improving bond development, it enhances manufacturing efficiency. In coatings, it functions as a crosslinking catalyst for moisture-cure and two-part urethane systems applied to substrates.
Life science and biotechnology applications include its use as an antifade mounting medium component. In this role, it inhibits photobleaching in fluorescence microscopy preparations for laboratory research.
The product is supplied as a white crystalline solid, typically in powder or granule form. It is also available as pre-dissolved solutions in glycols such as dipropylene glycol for easier handling.
Standard commercial grades are available at high purity levels suitable for catalyst applications. Solution concentrations are commonly at 33% active content in glycol carriers for precise dosing.
Technical grade is the primary market specification for industrial use. Supply is typically managed in bags, drums, and IBCs to meet the logistical needs of large-scale chemical manufacturing facilities.
