Chloroallyl methenamine chloride

Chloroallyl methenamine chloride (CAS 51229-78-8), commercially recognized as the cis-form of Quaternium-15, is a formaldehyde-releasing biocide used to control microbial growth in water-based industrial and personal care formulations. It functions by generating controlled levels of formaldehyde in situ, providing broad-spectrum preservation against bacteria, yeasts, and molds. In coatings and adhesives, it protects water-based systems from microbial spoilage.

This includes latex paints and construction adhesives during storage and in-can use. Personal care formulators incorporate it as a preservative in rinse-off and leave-on products such as shampoos, conditioners, and lotions. Consistent antimicrobial efficacy across a broad pH range is a key selection criterion for these applications. Sealant and elastomer manufacturers use it to extend the shelf life of aqueous dispersions susceptible to bacterial contamination.
