Description

Triethylamine hydrochloride (CAS 554-68-7), also known as triethylammonium chloride and commonly abbreviated as TEA·HCl, is the stable salt form of triethylamine produced by neutralization with hydrochloric acid. It functions primarily as a pH buffer, reaction intermediate, and auxiliary agent across pharmaceutical synthesis, textile processing, and specialty chemical manufacturing for various industrial applications.

In pharmaceutical manufacturing, TEA·HCl acts as a buffering agent and counterion source in API synthesis, where controlled pH and stable amine delivery are critical to reaction yield and purity. Textile and leather processors use it as an auxiliary in dyebath formulations, improving dye uptake and fixation on fiber substrates. In paper treatment, it supports surface chemistry modifications.

This occurs where controlled charge interaction between fiber and coating agents is required. It also serves as a synthetic intermediate in the preparation of quaternary ammonium compounds. These compounds and other specialty amines are used in preservation and biocide formulations. Triethylamine hydrochloride is supplied as a white crystalline powder or granular solid for easy handling.

Standard commercial grades include technical and pharmaceutical-grade material, with pharmaceutical supply typically conforming to in-house or compendial specifications depending on the intended synthesis application. Packaging ranges from small laboratory quantities to bulk industrial supply. This ensures that the material meets the rigorous demands of both research facilities and large-scale chemical production plants.
