Soybean oil methyl ester
Description
Soybean oil methyl ester (CAS 67784-80-9) is produced by transesterification of soybean oil and functions as a bio-based solvent, lubricant base, and plasticizer across multiple industrial sectors.
Derived from a renewable feedstock, it offers formulators a plant-derived alternative to petroleum-based functional fluids and carriers. In industrial and household cleaning formulations, it acts as a solvent carrier.
It is used for degreasers, paint strippers, and hard-surface cleaners where low toxicity and good solvency are procurement priorities. Metalworking fluid manufacturers incorporate it as a base stock or co-solvent.
It is utilized in cutting, grinding, and forming lubricants, where its film-forming character supports metal protection during processing. In plastics compounding, it functions as a plasticizer and processing aid.
This is particularly useful in PVC and flexible polymer systems where bio-content is a formulation requirement. It also serves as a biodiesel blend component and carrier fluid in agricultural chemical formulations.
Soybean oil methyl ester is supplied as an amber to pale yellow liquid in bulk, IBC, and drum formats. Technical grade is the standard commercial offering for most industrial applications.
Refined grades are available for applications requiring lower color and reduced impurity profiles. Specifications typically align with ASTM D6751 parameters where biodiesel-grade material is required.
