Methyl ester sulfonate (CAS 93348-22-2), abbreviated MES, is a bio-based anionic surfactant derived from natural fatty acids in the C16–18 range.

Where is Methyl ester sulfonate used?

• Home care: primary active in laundry powders and bars, maintaining cleaning performance in hard water
• Textile and leather processing: scouring and wetting agent that removes oils and sizing agents from fabric during pre-treatment
• Agricultural formulations: emulsifier and dispersant in pesticide concentrates
• Floor care and hard surface cleaners incorporate the material for degreasing efficiency at moderate use levels.

Good to know: Hard water conditions often challenge conventional linear alkylbenzene sulfonates. Sodium salt form is the predominant commercial variant.
