Nonyl Phenol Ethoxylate
Description
Nonyl Phenol Ethoxylate (CAS 68412-54-4), commonly abbreviated as NPE, is a nonionic surfactant produced by ethoxylating nonylphenol to varying degrees. It delivers emulsification, wetting, and degreasing performance across a broad range of industrial formulations. In industrial and institutional cleaning, NPE functions as a primary surfactant in hard surface cleaners, degreasers, and heavy-duty detergents where robust soil removal is required. Textile processors use it as a wetting and scouring agent.
During fiber preparation, dyeing, and finishing operations, it ensures uniform chemical penetration. In agricultural formulations, it acts as an emulsifier and dispersant in pesticide and herbicide concentrates, improving active ingredient stability and spray coverage. Coatings and adhesive manufacturers incorporate NPE as a dispersant for pigments and fillers, and as an emulsifier in latex systems. This versatile chemical is essential for maintaining stability in complex chemical mixtures and emulsions.
Nonyl Phenol Ethoxylate is supplied as a liquid or paste, depending on the degree of ethoxylation. Lower EO grades tend to be oil-soluble liquids, while higher EO grades are water-soluble and more viscous. It is available in technical grade, with common ethoxylation levels ranging from NP-4 to NP-40 to suit specific HLB requirements. Bulk supply is standard in drums and IBC containers for large-scale industrial applications.
